Former OLPH educator Sister Helen Sherrard, BVM, dies

DUBUQUE, Iowa — Sister Helen Sherrard , BVM (Agneselle), died Oct. 21 at Marian Hall in Dubuque, Iowa. She was 87.

Sister Helen is buried in the Mount Carmel cemetery in Dubuque.

In the Diocese of Knoxville, Sister Helen was a librarian, parish minister and volunteer at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Chattanooga from 1982 to 2003. She also taught elementary school and was superior/principal in Wichita, Kan.; Pasadena, Calif.; and in Cedar Falls, Clinton, Iowa City, Davenport, Dubuque and Tama in Iowa.

She was born Dec. 17, 1925, to William and Agnes Mae Larson Sherrard. She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary congregation from Sacred Heart Parish in Boone, Iowa, on Sept. 8, 1943. She professed first vows on March 19, 1946, and final vows on Aug. 15, 1951.

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Penny Sherrard of Childers, Texas; nieces and nephews; and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 70 years.
