Eucharistic flash mob gathers in Market Square

It was a unique and inspiring display of faith on Market Square in downtown Knoxville May 30 when some 50 people took part in a Eucharistic flash mob in reverent adoration of the Holy Eucharist.

One by one, the Catholic faithful gradually gathered before Father Aaron Wessman and knelt as he held a monstrance with the Holy Eucharist. As Father Wessman, associate pastor of Saith John Paul II and Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Catholic missions, stood before the faithful with monstrance raised, Deacon Jim Lawson of Sacred Heart Cathedral gave a recitation.

After a few moments of kneeling on Market Square, a popular destination in the center of downtown Knoxville, those in the flash mob processed to nearby Immaculate Conception Church, where there was exposition and adoration of the Holy Eucharist for about 45 minutes before Benediction.

Market Square was crowded with people leaving work and gathering at its restaurants, many of whom looked with curiosity at the flash mob. When one bystander asked what was going on, one of the flash mob participants explained that it was Eucharistic adoration.
