James Lutz, a sixth-grader at St. Mary School in Oak Ridge, was awarded first place locally in the recent Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) essay contest.
The VFW’s annual youth essay contest invites students from sixth, seventh, and eighth grades to submit essays reflecting on yearly themes concerning patriotism. Student essays are reviewed by the VFW post and then advance to compete at the regional, state, and national levels. The 2022 theme was “My Pledge to Our Veterans.” Essays are evaluated based on knowledge of the theme, theme development, and clarity of ideas.
