Former priest William Casey laicized

Bishop Richard F. Stika has announced that former priest William Casey has been dismissed from the priesthood by Pope Benedict XVI.

Mr. Casey was convicted in July 2011 of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and aggravated rape and is serving a prison sentence.

In an announcement to priests and deacons in the diocese on Jan. 10, Bishop Stika said:

“I have received word from the Holy See that His Holiness, Pope Benedict the XVI, dismissed William Casey from the clerical state (laicized). Through this laicization, Mr. Casey returns to the lay state. I request that you continue to pray for Warren Tucker and for all victims of abuse throughout the world. I also ask you to pray for Mr. Casey and his family,” Bishop Stika said.
