Joseph Fredrick Wenther Jr., age 83, passed away on April 14 in Knoxville.
Mr. Wenther was born on May 29, 1942, in Sioux City, Iowa, to parents Joseph and Thelma Wenther.
He graduated from high school and completed more than three years of college. In 1967, he joined the U.S. Army and proudly served his country. During his military service, he attained the rank of corporal and was awarded the Purple Heart.
His commendations include the Sharpshooter Badge (M-16 Rifle), Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal with “V” Device, and the National Defense Service Medal.
During his retirement, Mr. Wenther found great joy in woodworking and wood carving.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara K. Wenther.
He is survived by his sons, Scott Wenther (Stephanie), Mark Wenther (Julie), and Jay Wenther (Pam); as well as six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Jim and Barbara Edwards, dear friends and neighbors, who have helped tremendously since the passing of Mr. Wenther’s wife.
A funeral Mass for Mr. Wenther was held on July 27 at All Saints Church in Knoxville. Following the Mass, an inurnment service with full military honors was held at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville.
